More than half of Hong Kong people believe that there are not enough opportunities for the upper class of young people. How many people think that it is better than ten years ago?

According to the latest poll by the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, more than half of the respondents believe that there are insufficient opportunities for young people to go to the upper class, and more than 65% believe that the opportunities are worse than ten years ago. In the end, how do young people understand the upper class in society?

If young people leave Hong Kong, will the public think that they have a better chance of developing and succeeding?


At the end of April, the Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies at CUHK interviewed 706 people aged 18 or above by telephone to investigate their views on social mobility in Hong Kong.

The results show that half of the respondents believe that the current opportunities for young people to go up in society are not enough, and only 1 adult thinks that it is enough.

The survey also found out the respondents' views on social upward mobility. "Increasing wealth and career development" and "improving the quality of life" are regarded as social upward mobility by 3 adults each.

As for educational knowledge level and social influence, only 17% and 6% of the respondents believed that they could reflect the upward mobility of society.

In addition, when asked about the opportunities for upward mobility in society between the present and ten years ago, 65% of the respondents believe that the opportunities for young people to be upwards have deteriorated.

At the same time, more than 40% of adults think it will get worse in the next ten years, and only 20% think it will get better.

The public thinks that the prospect of upward mobility of young people in Hong Kong is not optimistic. When asked if young people will have a better chance to develop and succeed if they leave Hong Kong, about 17% and 21% respectively think that there will be better opportunities in foreign countries and the mainland. 27% and 33% of the respondents think no, which is about 10 percentage points more than that.

The remaining about half of the respondents were more reserved, believing that there is a 50/50 chance.
