Drama in Ukraine: 264 wounded Ukrainian fighters were rescued from the Azobstal factory, besieged by the Russian army in the city of Mariupol, and transferred for medical treatment in the occupied territories by Russia.

According to Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Melier, 53 seriously wounded soldiers were transferred to Tipu to the city of Novoazovsk and another 211 less severely wounded soldiers were taken for treatment elsewhere in the occupied territory.

Ukrainian media reported that the transfer of the wounded had been agreed between Kyiv and Moscow and in exchange for the official surrender of the wounded fighters, Russia would allow them to transfer Lady Ukraine as part of an official prisoner exchange that would take place soon.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zalansky in a nightly speech referred to the reports and said the agreement was reached thanks to the negotiating teams, intelligence services and security forces and ongoing discussions to rescue all the besieged soldiers in the besieged steel plant.

"Ukraine needs its heroes alive," the president said.

The issue of the fate of the besieged Mariupol fighters became a national controversy in Ukraine as criticism of the authorities and military authorities increased with the aggravation of the situation of the besieged forces.

Experts estimated last week that close to 2,000 fighters, 600 of them wounded, remained in the areas of the besieged and frequently shelled steel plant by the Russian military.

The fighters belong to the Moss Regiment, a volunteer force founded by a far-right group, as well as several hundred fighters from the Ukrainian Marine Corps.

The Ukrainian fighters fortified themselves well in the vast factory grounds and used the underground spaces and mazes of its tunnels to wage a guerrilla war against the Russian army and captivate large forces into the city, which was destroyed in almost three months of brutal siege.
