After seven years, Germany will again hold the G7 presidency at the 2022 summit.

Read here what that means exactly – and what goals it has set itself.

Elmau – Punctually at the turn of the year on January 1, 2022, Germany took over the G7 presidency.

The heads of state and government of the G7 countries will exchange views on important global issues from June 26 to 28, 2022.

As in 2015, the summit will take place in Schloss Elmau (Garmisch-Partenkirchen district).

Against the picturesque backdrop of the Bavarian Alps, Germany wants to score with its G7 presidency as a good host of the annual G7 summit, which sometimes includes an excellent security concept.

G7 Summit 2022 in Elmau: Motto of the Presidency - "Progress for a just world"

On the one hand, the presidency of the G7 meeting takes care of its organization, on the other hand, the agenda of the summit.

The motto of the German presidency of the 2022 summit is “Progress for a just world”.

With the G7 presidency, the current federal government promises to be actively involved in global issues right from the start of the legislative period.

It remains to be seen to what extent the goal set for the G7 meeting in Elmau 2022 can be met and what kind of headwind can be expected from demonstrations by numerous opponents of the summit.

Before the G7 summit in 2022: Germany can already look back on so many G7 presidencies

Germany holds the presidency of the summit meeting for the seventh time.

The first G7 meeting under the German Presidency took place in Bonn on July 16-17, 1978.

Two of Germany's presidencies were still in the G8 with Russia before the country was suspended from meetings until further notice in response to the annexation of Crimea.

Germany has already held the following G7 presidencies:

Summit in Elmau: Who is the G7 meeting at the end of June 2022?

The G7 is the Group of Seven.

It sees itself as an “informal forum for the seven leading industrial nations and democracies”.

Participants of the summit meeting are Germany, Canada, France, Italy, Japan, Great Britain and the United States of America.

The European Union is also represented at the summit.

Like the G20, the G7 is not an international organization.

It therefore has neither its own administrative apparatus nor a permanent representation of its members.

Not least because of the informal structures, the respective presidency - in 2022 the German G7 presidency - plays a particularly important role.

The presidency of the summit alternates annually between the members on a regular basis.

    So find it

every seven years, or every eight years when Russia was still there, in Germany.

In 2021, Great Britain held the G7 presidency, and in 2023 the summit will be organized and hosted by Japan.
