The Inter-American Press Association (IAPA) described the panorama of regional journalism as bleak due to the climate of violence with attacks, harassment, stigmatization and murders.
Jorge Canahuati, president of the IAPA, stated in an interview with Carmen Aristegui that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is "intolerant" of the press and "stigmatizes" the work of journalism.
López Obrador recently said he was "proud" of what is happening in Mexico in terms of freedom of expression, since -- he added -- his government does not censor or persecute anyone.
On the other hand, Nicaraguan Independent Journalists and Communicators (PCIN) reported 175 attacks on the press in the first quarter of 2022. The government of Daniel Ortega has remained silent on the PCIN report,
