The besieged steel plant in the besieged Mariupol was liberated last night, and the army began evacuating hundreds of people trapped there to hospitals in Russian-controlled areas, the Ukrainian military said.
Among the evacuees are dozens injured in critical condition.
"The High Military Command has ordered the commanders of the units stationed in the area to save the lives of their men and evacuate the scene," it was reported.
With the evacuation of the last Ukrainian military stronghold in Mariupol, control of the city will be completely transferred to the Russian forces that invaded the country about three months ago and have since besieged the city.
This is a significant defeat for the Ukrainian army, in the longest and bloodiest battle in the war between the two countries.
According to Kyiv, in the bombed-out city tens of thousands of civilians were killed in Russian army bombings.

It is estimated that about 600 people were besieged inside the steel plant.
Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Anna Miliar said 53 wounded soldiers were evacuated from the factory to the Russian-held town of Novoazovsk, and another 211 people were evacuated to the Russian-backed separatist town of Olnivka.
According to her, they will be settled in their country as part of a potential captive deal in the future.
"We hope we will be able to save the lives of our people," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zalansky said on the issue in a statement released this morning.
"There are some among them with serious injuries, they are receiving treatment. Ukraine needs its Ukrainian heroes alive."
