The Ministry of Transport issued a decision to create a (Sailors and Workers Union on the High Seas) in coordination with the General Federation of Trade Unions.
In a statement to SANA, Deputy Transport Minister Ammar Kamal El-Din said that the new union includes (sailors and ship workers) and is affiliated with the Tartous Workers Union and the Professional Confederation of Transport Workers within the organizational structure of the General Federation of Trade Unions.
Kamal El-Din explained that the number of seafarers in Syria exceeds 25,000 sailors who had no organization before the establishment of this union, pointing out that coordination is currently taking place with the Workers Union to hold a founding conference for the newly created union in Tartous to elect a union office based on the electoral instructions contained in the decision of the General Council of the Workers Union.
Kamal El-Din pointed out that the creation of the union is an important step in supporting the maritime transport sector and its workers, and came based on their interests, issues and demands, in line with and in line with the International Maritime Labor Convention issued by the International Labor Organization.
According to Kamal al-Din, the updated union includes Syrian sailors working on various ships, whether owned by Syrians or registered under the Syrian flag or in other countries of various ranks and categories.
