[Tuen Ma Line/Tuen Mun South Extension Line] After the opening of the sea-crossing section of the East Rail Line, no other new routes will be opened to traffic in the short term, but a number of railway infrastructures have been finalized and planning has been launched one after another.

Among them, the Tuen Mun South Extension of the Tuen Ma Line is expected to start construction next year and be completed in 2030. Public consultation on environmental impact assessment is currently underway.

According to the latest environmental impact assessment report of the Tuen Mun South Extension submitted by the consulting company, three options have been considered for the alignment of the line, mainly involving the establishment of a new "Area 16 Station" between the current Tuen Mun Station and the future Tuen Mun South Station. "s position.

The proposed location of the station is near the Tuen Mun swimming pool. The report assesses the site selection of the new station. If it is built directly at the location of the existing Tuen Mun swimming pool, the completion time will be affected.

If it is placed on the west side of the swimming pool and built along the Tuen Mun River, it may affect the water quality of the Tuen Mun River.

In the end, the station in the 16th district "dropped ink in the middle" was placed between the swimming pool and the Tuen Mun River to avoid touching the main area of the swimming pool.

The report also mentioned that during the construction period, it is planned to build a temporary steel platform on the embankment of the Tuen Mun River during the dry season, and build the piers and viaduct structures in stages, hoping to minimize the environmental impact.

Two new stations serve a population of 109,000 and help reduce congestion on Tuen Mun Road and Castle Peak Road

MTR earlier appointed AECOM, an engineering company, as the design consultant for the Tuen Mun South Extension.

AECOM pointed out in the EIA report that the Tuen Mun South Extension Line can improve the traffic in the south of Tuen Mun city center through railways. There are about 109,000 people in the area. After the extension line is opened to traffic, it only takes 500 meters to walk to the newly built Tuen Mun South. Station and District 16 Station.

The report goes on to point out that the project will help ease the traffic in Tuen Mun District and reduce the pollution caused by land traffic. If the project is not promoted, it is believed that the congestion problem on Tuen Mun Road and Castle Peak Road will be further aggravated.

The report emphasized that without the Tuen Mun South Extension, citizens living in the south of Tuen Mun would take 10 to 20 minutes to reach Tuen Mun Station, and it would be difficult to relieve traffic congestion.

After the completion of the project, the 16th district station will help to release the development potential of the district, serving the existing population of 42,000. With the completion of new housing projects in the future, the district will add another 24,000 people.

The report also revealed that during the design of the extension scheme, different schemes were conceived and subject to different environmental constraints. The main difference between several schemes was the location of the 16th station.

One of the plans is to set up the 16th area station at the current site of the Tuen Mun swimming pool. The route will pass through the government's provisional government land, short-term lease land, and the Tuen Mun training ground of the Hong Kong Institute of Construction.

The EIA report pointed out that this scheme had little impact on the water quality of the Tuen Mun River, but before the relocation of the swimming pool was completed, the construction could not be started, and the completion might be delayed in disguise.

Another option is to build the District 16 station to the west of the swimming pool, along the Tuen Mun River.

The report pointed out that although the shortcomings of the previous plan were avoided, it might further affect the water quality of the Tuen Mun River. The plan was also not adopted in the end.

The third option is the currently selected option. According to the plan, the "Middle Loose Mo" will be built between the Tuen Mun Swimming Pool and the Tuen Mun River in the 16th District Station, so as to avoid touching the main area of the swimming pool.

According to the report, under this scheme, the main pool part of the swimming pool does not need to be demolished before construction starts, and the impact on the water quality of the Tuen Mun River can also be controlled.

The construction of new bridge piers on the overhead road section on the Tuen Mun River has a temporary impact on the water quality of the river

In terms of environmental impact, the construction of the project will include the installation of new piers in the Tuen Mun River, and the use of cofferdams and prefabricated pile caps to create a dry working environment, which is expected to have a temporary impact on water quality.

In addition, during the construction period, there may be slight to moderate ecological impacts on the nighttime habitation of egrets in Tuen Mun Park, and potential impacts on their flight paths, but not unacceptable impacts.

At the same time, in Tuen Mun Area 44, there is a liquefied petroleum gas storage depot adjacent to the site area, and some of the proposed railway lines are also in this area. Therefore, good safety measures must be implemented during the construction stage to minimize the risk level .

The extension may be further developed in the future to connect the western part of Tuen Mun

The report also revealed that the government plans to reclaim the land in the west of Tuen Mun, namely Lung Kwu Tan, and then develop it. In the future, it is necessary to study whether a railway can be built to connect the west of Tuen Mun to Tuen Mun South Station.
