Germany supplies more weapons to Ukraine

7.40 a.m .:

The federal government has delivered more weapons to Ukraine to fight the Russian army.

According to SPIEGEL information, 2,450 RGW 90 anti-tank handguns, 1,600 DM22 anti-tank directional mines and 3,000 DM31 anti-tank mines have arrived in Ukraine in the past two weeks and have been distributed to units of the local army.

Information about the new deliveries was confirmed to SPIEGEL by Ukrainian government circles.

The Ukraine had ordered and paid for the RGW 90 anti-tank weapons, which the Bundeswehr calls the Matador, directly from a German manufacturer.

The anti-tank mines, meanwhile, apparently come from Bundeswehr stocks.

The list of German arms deliveries is getting longer with the further tranche.

Berlin had primarily delivered anti-tank weapons, armored vehicles, millions of rounds of ammunition of various calibers and explosives to the Ukraine.

The lists of deliveries also include 15 bunker-busting weapons, so-called bunker fists, or remote detonators for explosive devices.

So far, however, deliveries of heavy weapons have not started.

The Bundeswehr is already training Ukrainian soldiers on the »Panzerhaubitze2000«.

However, it is not expected until July that the seven modern artillery systems that Germany has promised to Kyiv will be relocated.

The delivery of the announced “Gepard” anti-aircraft tanks is also being delayed further, as the ammunition for the system, which is now scarcely available, has to be searched for around the world.

The defense ministers of the European Union will deal with the Ukraine war on Tuesday.

At the Brussels meeting, the representatives of the EU countries want to exchange views via video conference with the Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Resnikov and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

UNICEF: Ukraine war exacerbates child malnutrition

3 a.m.:

According to UNICEF, the war in Ukraine is exacerbating the problem of severe malnutrition among children.

"Even before the war in Ukraine, many families were struggling to feed their children due to conflict, climate shock and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic," said Catherine Russell, UNICEF Executive Director.

Now there are additional problems.

The Ukraine, which is regarded as Europe's granary, can export far less grain as a result of the war, among other things.

The Unicef report, Severe Acute Malnutrition: A Deadly Threat for Children, released on Tuesday, warns that both the number of children affected by malnutrition and the cost of the supplemental food they need will rise.

Supplementary food, also called peanut paste, consists mainly of peanuts, oil, sugar and milk powder.

It also has a long shelf life without refrigeration.

According to Unicef, it is the main supplier of such peanut paste worldwide.
