Ayuso defends that Spain is a "single nation" and Rueda claims the "historical nationality" of Galicia

The PP is still entangled by the territorial model of Spain.

The popular have stumbled in the debate on the conception of the Spanish nation, which is showing the different sensitivities in the party on a core issue for the right.

Far from being a settled matter, this Wednesday the statements of different regional presidents of the PP have continued to add fuel to the fire.

The contrast is clear.

While Isabel Díaz Ayuso, president of the Community of Madrid, has defended that Spain is a "single nation" and the autonomous communities have "peculiarities", Alfonso Rueda, recently elected president of the Xunta de Galicia, has claimed that his land is a “historical nationality”.

In parallel, the leader of the PP has tried to put out the fire with the defense of a "useful autonomy" and criticizing Vox.

The debate on the nationalities recognized by the Spanish Constitution has never been peaceful in the PP.

The founder of the PP and father of the Constitution, Manuel Fraga, opposed the inclusion of this term in the Magna Carta, arguing that "nation and nationality are the same."

Part of the right still does not accept it and prefers not to talk about nationalities, but about regions or simply autonomous communities.

Like Isabel Díaz Ayuso, who this Wednesday insisted that there is "one nation [the Spanish], we are 17 autonomous communities, national sovereignty resides in the Spanish people as a whole and our maximum representation is the King, who is a guarantee of equality and Unit".

Ayuso has pointed out that beyond that there is only confusion.

The "political rolls in which we are getting into", she has said.

On the other hand, in historical communities such as Galicia, the PP's discourse is different, and this has been evidenced by Alberto Núñez Feijóo himself speaking of "Catalan nationality" in Barcelona, ​​and his successor as president of the Xunta, Alfonso Rueda, who this Wednesday has claimed the "historical nationality" of Galicia.

Rueda recalled that this is stated in the Constitution, and that is why Galicia has a "series of additions and background that differentiate it from other communities that do not have that qualification", although Galicia is "part of a nation that is Spain".

The problem with this debate in the PP, in the eyes of different territorial leaders, is that it can give wings to Vox, a split from the PP that differs from the popular ones, among other issues, in the commitment to the centralism of the State and the suppression of the autonomous communities.

Alberto Núñez Feijóo has tried again this Wednesday to settle the entanglement by the territorial model.

Given the discomfort in sectors of the party due to the error -corrected- by ​​the general coordinator, Elías Bendodo, who spoke of the "plurinationality" of Spain, and Feijóo's commitment to defending "nationalities", the leader of the PP defended this Wednesday a “useful” autonomy.

The head of the conservatives has opposed his model to that of Vox and the PSOE,

Feijóo has vindicated the State of the autonomies, "conceived by the Spaniards in accordance with the peculiarities of the nation and that has had a remarkable success".

"Proof of this is that no one has been able to provide an alternative model," he reflected.

"Today we know what an autonomous State is, but nobody has clarified what a confederal, asymmetrical, multilevel Spain consists of...", he criticized in reference to the PSOE's proposals.

Later he has harshly charged against Vox: “Even those who propose the suppression of the autonomous communities have no qualms about participating in the Government of the autonomous communities.

They therefore tacitly admit that their projects are chimeras, they lack the courage to expressly admit it, which reveals their plot weakness”.

Meanwhile, in the PP the confusion increases.
