(CNN) --

Tuesday was an eventful day for Biniam Girmay, who made history at the Giro d'Italia but later had to go to hospital for an eye injury sustained during the podium celebration.

Eritrean Girmay became the first black African to win a stage in one of cycling's Grand Tours when he beat Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel on stage 10 of the Giro, between Pescara and Jesi.

Biniam Girmay accidentally hit his left eye with a cork after his victory in the 10th stage of the Giro d'Italia.

However, the 22-year-old had to drop out of the race after a prosecco cork hit him in the left eye on the podium.

According to his Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert team doctor, Piet Daneels, Girmay suffered a haemorrhage in the anterior chamber of his eye and has been advised to avoid physical activity.

"Our priority is the complete healing of the injury and that is why we have decided together with the rider and the sports director that Biniam will not compete at the start of the eleventh stage," said Daneels.

Girmay, who made his Grand Tour debut at this year's Giro, competed closely in a sprint finish with van der Poel in the final 200 meters of Tuesday's stage and held off the Alpecin-Fenix rider to take victory .

Girmay celebrates his victory in the 10th stage of the Giro.

Van der Poel, by the way, was also hit by an exploding prosecco cork after the first stage of this year's Giro, but luckily for him he remained unharmed after it hit him in the face.

The Giro started on May 6 and ends on May 29.

The Spanish Juan Pedro López currently leads the general classification ahead of the Portuguese João Almeida and the Frenchman Romain Bardet.
