Should you leave the Corona mask on at folk festivals?

Not necessarily, says BRK state doctor Dr.

Florian Meier.

You can also drop them off in the beer tent.

District - The incidence in the district oscillates around the 1000 mark and thus occupies top positions nationwide.

In an interview, family doctor and BRK state doctor Dr.

Florian Meier from Miesbach explains why he thinks folk festival visitors can still do without masks at the moment.

Dr.

Meier, the incidence in the district is once again one of the highest in Germany.

How come?

I can't pinpoint where this incidence comes from.

In the past, when family doctors tested like mad in front of the health department, we had one of the best testing systems in Bavaria in the district.

As a result, we fished out many sick people and had a high incidence compared to others.

This is no longer the case.

The tests decrease significantly.

At the moment we don't have any clear infection clusters either.

What role do folk festivals play?

Can festivals and events prevent summer from lowering the incidence as in previous years?

I can't look into the crystal ball, but I don't think so.

All flu-like effects become less frequent in warm weather.

So I think we can look forward to the summer with ease.

It will be exciting to see what autumn brings.

Then the incidences will rise again.

To say now how far would be speculation.

Let's stay with folk festivals: Many people want to enjoy normalcy again and go to the beer tent without a mask.

But you also want to act responsibly.

How do you find a middle ground?

That is a difficult question.

Distance remains the most important remedy against Corona.

In situations where I can't keep my distance, the mask helps.

Of course, nobody wants to sit in the beer tent with a mask.

I have to remember that with the mask I not only protect myself, but also my fellow human beings.

At the folk festival this means: If you don't want to get Corona under any circumstances, don't sit in the beer tent and sway.

That's why I think it's reasonable to take off the mask at the folk festival.

It's different in the supermarket: I can stand at the checkout behind someone who's undergoing chemotherapy.

To protect him, I still recommend the mask there.

You mentioned it: the district tests a lot less.

Is the incidence still meaningful?

Incidence describes the cases that we know for sure we have.

Since many people no longer go to testing, there is certainly a dark figure.

I can't say how high it is.

However, the incidence remains meaningful: other counties have the same easing and are not testing less.

So we know that we are far ahead in Germany.

Has the impact of the pandemic on sick leave and intensive care units decreased?

Yes.

The gradients are relatively harmless.

I don't see the danger that many people will die from Corona at the moment.

For a long time, we had a lot to do with tests and illnesses in our practices.

That has eased considerably.

We are also issuing fewer sick notes.

We are well below the level of a few weeks ago.
