The war in Ukraine is a serious warning to Europeans who have underinvested in their armies.
For the record, between 1999 and 2021, EU defense spending only increased by 20% when, over the same period, the United States, Russia and China increased it by 66% respectively, 292 % and 592%.
Only 8 countries out of the 21 current members of NATO which are also part of the EU respect the objective of 2% of GDP.
This conventional war waged by Russia has also contributed to further weakening the state of forces, as almost all the Member States have chosen from the start of the conflict to supply arms and equipment to kyiv, draining their stocks.
On Tuesday, Defense Ministers meeting in Brussels still agreed on a new envelope of 500 million euros to finance arms deliveries to Ukraine.
