Kochel – An important step has now been taken for local transport to Lake Walchen: In the summer months, the buses from Kochel now run every half hour.

From June, the RVO buses will run every half hour between the Kochler train station and the southern shore of Lake Walchensee.

The bus route 9608 actually goes to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, but there are capacity problems mainly to the excursion destinations Herzogstand and Walchensee.

Regionalverkehr Oberbayern GmbH (RVO) therefore has the additional buses turn around in Einsiedl and drive back to Kochel.

"This is the central north-south connection in our community," explains Kochel's Mayor Thomas Holz (CSU) at the most recent municipal council meeting.

He believes that due to the increased frequency and the coordination of bus and train, traveling by public transport is becoming more and more interesting for day trippers.

The decision to run every half hour was recently made in the District Committee for the Environment, Infrastructure and Tourism, but not unanimously (see box).

“You definitely have to keep an eye on the costs,” Holz showed understanding for those district councils who failed to vote due to the additional costs.

However, the decision is an important step for the Walchensee concept, emphasized Kochel's head of town hall.

Not all district councils for it

The RVO has offered the district of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen to

add two additional buses to its line 9608 at the weekend

.

The offer was a topic in the infrastructure committee.

"Since the half-hourly cycle is only to be implemented in the summer months, the measure could begin as early as June 4th," reported Matthias Schmid, who is responsible for public transport at the district office.

In the adopted local transport plan, "the tourism line has priority one".

Therefore, the infrastructure has already been created with an

alternative parking lot on the southern shore of Lake Walchen

.

The parking lot in Einsiedl was necessary so that the buses could turn there for the outward and return journey.

Also because the neighboring district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen is not participating in the clock compression for the time being.

Because the expansion of public transport offers relief for excursion traffic, especially in the summer months, the district environmental committee approved the additional trips.

Nevertheless, Georg Riesch (FW) asked "whether the increase in frequency" would bring anything at all in view of the risk of traffic jams on weekends.

Schmid replied: "Yes, if several people take the bus instead of the car." Michael Häsch (CSU), on the other hand, wanted to know from Schmid how the line was accepted.

"Less if the weather is bad," but when the weather is nice, there is potential for additional buses, according to the public transport expert.

The

costs for this year are 65,000 euros.

However, the RVO cannot yet estimate a price for 2023 - "because the current political events are having an impact on the price of diesel," the letter says.

This worried some district councillors, but the majority voted to increase the frequency of line 9608, which will be in use until the end of October.

Franz Schöttl, Anton Ortlieb and Lydia Hofherr (CSU) voted against.
