How can I get to the Oktoberfest 2022 quickly and without stress?

Which public transport go to the fairground, where can I park - and how much does it cost?

All information at a glance.

Munich - When the Oktoberfest 2022 starts on September 17, thousands of visitors have a common goal every day: the Munich Theresienwiese.

A large part of the crowd squeezes into the subway and S-Bahn or the bus and then pushes through the main entrance onto the Volksfestplatz - or pays a lot of money for a parking lot in the city center.

It doesn't have to be.

We have tips on how to get to the Wiesn with a little less stress.

Theresienwiese underground station: As the name suggests, the stop for lines U4 (green) or U5 (yellow) is right in front of the main entrance to the Oktoberfest.

This station is therefore the busiest in the whole city during the Oktoberfest.

People literally stream out of the wagons and then form a huge queue because of the bag checks.

If you want to save time and nerves, you should avoid this route to the Wiesn.

Getting to the Oktoberfest 2022: Stress-free to the Wiesn

During peak times at the weekend, it is advisable to remain seated on the subway heading out of town and only get off at the Schwanthalerhöhe stop.

From there it is only a few meters to the Oktoberfest entrance at the Bavaria Hall of Fame.

The underground lines U3 and U6 also bring Oktoberfest visitors to half a chicken and a cool beer mug.

The correct stations are called Goetheplatz or Poccistraße.

The fairground can be reached in a few minutes on foot from both stops.

With the subway, S-Bahn and tram to the Oktoberfest

The Hackerbrücke station is the right stop for S-Bahn drivers: All lines of the main route (S1 to S8) stop here.

If you take the S-Bahn to Hackerbrücke in order to get to the Wiesn from there, you still have to plan a short walk through Munich.

It is about a ten-minute walk from the station to Theresienwiese.

Munich has a well-developed tram network, which of course also extends to the Theresienwiese.

If you want to take the tram to the Oktoberfest, you can use tram lines 18 and 19 and get off at Hermann-Lingg-Straße or Holzapfelstraße.

Or you can take tram lines 16/17 and ride to the Hackerbrücke, from where the Oktoberfest can be reached on foot in about ten minutes.

Via bus to the Oktoberfest in Munich - an overview of the lines:

  • Bus line 53 to the Schwanthalerhöhe stop.

  • Bus line 58 to the Georg-Hirth-Platz, Beethovenplatz or Goetheplatz stop.

  • Bus line 62 to the Hans-Fischer-Straße, Poccistraße or Herzog-Ernst-Platz stop.

  • Bus line 134 to the Theresienhöhe or Schwanthalerhöhe stop.

Subway, bus, tram: How much does it cost me to get to the Oktoberfest?

The selection of public transport heading for the Wiesn 2022 is therefore large.

But where can you get the right tickets - and how much does it cost?

The easiest way is probably to download the free Munich Transport Company (MVG) app directly onto your smartphone.

With the MVG app, you can find out the fastest connection to Theresienwiese from any location in just a few clicks - and buy the right ticket right away.

A single ticket for adults costs 3.50 euros for Zone M, for example, and a stripe ticket costs 15.20 euros.

Incidentally, the 9-euro ticket, which allows you to use local transport throughout Germany for three months, is no longer valid during the Oktoberfest.

The validity of the cheap ticket ends on August 31 - a good two weeks before the Oktoberfest begins.

(Our Munich newsletter regularly informs you about all the important stories from the Isar metropolis. Register here.)

All current prices for single, group and children's tickets can be found on the MVV website.

Incidentally, Wiesn visitors can also take advantage of offers such as the Bayern ticket and the Schönes-Wochenende ticket from Deutsche Bahn: the tickets are included in the area of validity of the MVV.

If you combine a visit to the Oktoberfest with a city trip to Munich, you could benefit from the CityTourCard Munich.

The day ticket is valid for all MVV means of transport in the selected area.

It also includes discounts on numerous attractions in and around Munich - making it ideal for tourists who want to see more of the state capital.

The prices for the ticket vary between 14.50 euros for single tickets in zone M and 37.90 euros for the group fare in zones M to 6.

Arriving by train: From the main train station to the Wiesn - and back home again

If you take the regional or long-distance train to Munich, you will inevitably end up at the main train station.

From here the Oktoberfest is not far away.

So it makes sense to use the path to the Theresienwiese for a stroll through the city and to walk about 15 minutes.

Alternatively, several subway and tram lines run from Munich Central Station to the Wiesn (see above).

By the way: During the Wiesn, Deutsche Bahn has a special timetable for heavily used train routes throughout Bavaria.

For example, additional regional trains are used on weekends and in the evenings the trains run longer than usual.

In this way, every Wiesn visitor arrives safely at home - even after a beer or two.

Parking at the Oktoberfest: Beware of usurious offers

There are good reasons not to come to the Oktoberfest in your own car: the good Oktoberfest beer, for example.

But the tense parking situation in Munich does not make it particularly attractive to drive there on your own four wheels.

If you still want to come by car, you can park the vehicle in a multi-storey car park in the city center - but that requires a deep dig into your wallet.

In addition, parking is usually not allowed for more than 24 hours at a time and it takes a lot of luck to find a free space at all.

Many a parking space is even traded as an overpriced long-term parking space during the Oktoberfest.

The landlords benefit - with extortionate prices of up to 250 euros per month.

Getting involved with such offers is just as inadvisable as the idea of looking for a parking space near the festival grounds on your own.

There are hardly any legal parking spaces there.

And illegal parkers are towed away immediately.

Park your car and continue by public transport: use the P+R facilities in Munich

It is cheaper and more convenient to use one of the Park+Ride car parks near the city center and continue with public transport.

For example, you can reach the Park+Ride Mangfallplatz in the south of Munich from the A995.

After all, there is space for 252 cars.

There are slightly smaller car parks near the city center at the Olympic Center, the West Cemetery and Heimeranplatz.

An overview of all Park+Ride car parks in Munich can be found here.

But don't forget small change.

The parking machines only take coins from ten cents and no debit cards.

Another Wiesn tip: reserve a table in the marquee in good time

Groups in particular who are planning to visit the Oktoberfest together should make reservations for the marquee early on.

After all, the rush is enormous and many tables in the tents have been reserved for a long time.

You can read from us how you can still get one of the coveted tables at the Oktoberfest 2022 and what you need to consider when making a reservation.
