Tropical cyclone Yakican swept through the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil, damaging buildings and cutting off power to thousands of homes.

The Associated Press quoted local authorities as saying today: “The hurricane caused power outages to 182,000 homes in the state, football matches canceled and schools and universities suspended due to fears of major disruptions caused by winds of more than 60 miles per hour.

The authorities indicated that work is underway to restore electricity to the affected areas.
