Authorities in Paraguay say goodbye to Marcelo Pecci 3:18

José Carlos Acevedo, mayor of the Paraguayan city of Pedro Juan Caballero, some 452 kilometers north of Asunción and bordering Brazil, suffered an attack on his life on Tuesday, according to local media reports and confirmed by the authorities responsible for the security of the country.
Acevedo was shot and underwent surgery shortly after.
In an interview with Noticias Paraguay, the Minister of the Interior, Federico González, said in the afternoon that the city was protected by the Paraguayan police and that they had support from Brazil to try to find those responsible for the attack.
"The city of Pedro Juan Caballero is surrounded by police officers. We have made contact with our colleagues, Brazilian units that are doing the same in support and coordination with the Paraguayan police forces," said Minister González.
The victim's brother, Ronald Acevedo, who is also the governor of the Department of Amambay, where the attack took place, gave a press conference from the hospital where José Carlos Acevedo is hospitalized.

Also at a press conference, Dr. David Peña, Mayor Acevedo's treating physician, pointed out that the patient has a reserved prognosis.
