2022-05-18T08:57:00.024Z

After the teachers' union declared a labor dispute, Shasha Bitton defends the educators • "Without raising wages and strengthening the status of teachers - there is no future for the education system and it means that there is no future for the state"

Against the background of the negotiations on teachers' salaries, Education Minister Yifat Shasha Bitton briefed the finance officials, claiming that they refuse to raise salaries.

In a scathing Facebook post, she wrote: "The budget department must understand the depth of the crisis.

Without raising teachers' salaries and strengthening their status - there is no future for the education system and this means that there is no future for the state.

"Education is no less important than security."

According to her, "teachers' salaries must rise significantly. The education system in Israel is in an ongoing crisis, which has intensified in the last two years due to the corona and has become a national crisis. This is reflected in the manpower shortage that continues to worsen."

She added: "A good, high-quality education system, one that forms a solid and solid foundation for the cultivation of a prosperous, progressive society, is based first and foremost on its human capital.

The Minister of Education noted that in a month the government is expected to approve the 2023 budget and at its base the new salary for teachers should also be included.

"I will fight for this agreement to include a significant and rewarding increase in teachers' salaries. A country that does not reward its teachers, sins against its future and endangers it," she wrote.

As you may recall, a month and a half before the end of the school year and the Teachers' Union, headed by Yaffa Ben-David, which represents kindergarten and middle school teachers and middle schools, has declared a labor dispute.

According to Ben-David, the conflict is in protest of the dragging of the legs of the finance officials when it comes to formulating the wage agreement.

According to the Histadrut, this is leading to a massive departure of teaching staff, for which it will not be possible to hold regular studies next year.

It should be noted that education ministers in the past have refrained from attacking finance officials in this way when it comes to teachers' salaries.
