The Indian authorities announced today, the evacuation of more than half a million people from their homes in the state of Assam, northeastern India, to escape severe floods caused by torrential rains, which resulted in the drowning of seven people.
"More than 500,000 people have been affected, and the flood situation is getting more and more dangerous every hour," said Bigosh Hazarika, Minister of Water Resources in the state, noting that seven people drowned in different circumstances during the past three days.
The Brahmaputra, one of the largest rivers in the world, which extends to neighboring Bangladesh, has overflowed its banks over the past three days in Assam.
