Phénéas Munyarugarama, one of the last five fugitives wanted for their role in the genocide of the Tutsi in Rwanda in 1994, died in 2002 in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, announced on Wednesday May 18 the UN prosecutors investigating the case.

Following a difficult and intense investigation, the Office of the Prosecutor was able to determine that Munyarugarama died of natural causes on or about February 28, 2002 in Kankwala
