Arrival of the Ukrainian fighters from the Azov Steel Plant in the Russian-controlled city of Olenivka.

According to eyewitness reports, several buses brought the prisoners of war to a former penal colony - it is still completely unclear how things will continue for them.

The Ukrainian government is seeking a prisoner exchange, but calls have been made from Russia to try the fighters as war criminals.

Even the reintroduction of the death penalty has been raised by the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party.

After the soldiers had endured weeks under the most adverse conditions in the catacombs of the plant in Mariupol, almost 260 people left the steelworks on Wednesday night, some lying on couches, and were taken away by the Russian army.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, a total of 959 fighters surrendered.

It is unclear how many soldiers are still staying in the industrial plant.

After the evacuation, the relatives of the fighters of the nationalist-dominated Azov regiment who remained in the steelworks were not only very skeptical about Russia, but also felt a little hope.

Kateryna, wife of an Azov soldier

“They are waiting to be rescued.

They only eat once a day, but they don't tell us so we don't worry.

But we do know what's going on, what their moral and physical condition is.

We're hoping for an evacuation."

Yulia, wife of an Azov soldier

'Yes, there is hope.

That they (the Ukrainian government) will do everything to get them out.

We try to help them somehow.

We are waiting."

Natalia, wife of an Azov soldier

"There is hope now, because in spite of everything, they are part of the Ukrainian army, there is hope that they will survive if evacuated."

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his daily video address that Russia had again launched heavy attacks on several Ukrainian cities.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine

“There were rocket attacks on the Lviv, Sumy and Chernihiv regions and air strikes on the Luhansk region, and targeted covert reconnaissance operations along our borders.

This was not just to create tension in our country or to test our armed forces.

This was an attempt to compensate the Russian army for a series of failures in the east and south of the country."

After 84 days of war, many cities are badly devastated - in Charkiv to the east, aid workers have now begun to demolish blocks of flats that had been damaged by rockets.
