The Hong Kong Society for the Protection of Children's "Tongleju" incident has attracted attention from all walks of life. Members heard the content of the Government's review of residential care and related services for children after the "Tongleju" incident, covering three main areas, namely service regulation and monitoring, service planning and delivery, and service quality and staff training. Completed in September.
In addition, the meeting also reviewed 259 deaths of children under the age of 18, of which 100 died of unnatural causes, most of which were suicide, followed by accidental deaths.
Members support the early implementation of the recommendations of the Child Mortality Review Committee.
Carrie Lam said that the 2021 Policy Address mentioned that the government will push forward the legislative work on the mandatory reporting mechanism of child abuse cases, and the Labour and Welfare Bureau aims to submit a bill to the Legislative Council in the first half of next year.
Members noted that the Government's work in stabilizing the epidemic is based on the principles of caring for children and supporting families.
In cases involving children, the Government is committed to ensuring that the interests of children and their families are taken into account in every decision made.
The Government will refrain from separating children from their parents during hospitalisation or quarantine and will fully take into account the special needs of affected children.
