Shanghai is opening up – at least a little.

For four days in a row, the authorities have not registered a new corona infection in the city.

Zero-Covid, the goal of the Communist Party, has thus been achieved again, at least for the moment, after weeks of a strict lockdown.

Passer-by:

»I have to buy a lot, spices, yoghurt.

And I haven't got the meat yet!'

However, not everyone is allowed to go to the supermarkets again - and not at any time.

The authorities hand out invitation cards with an exact time window written on them.

In addition, the customers must currently be tested negative.

Zhang Ruiqing, supermarket manager:

»We disinfect the whole market five times a day.

In key areas, such as the toilets and elevators, we disinfect every two hours.

Likewise the shopping baskets and trolleys.«

Disinfection squads are still ubiquitous.

People are only allowed to leave their blocks of flats alone and initially only twice a week.

Step by step, the measures are to be further relaxed until June - if there are no new infections.

The situation in Beijing is completely different.

The capital reported 50 new cases on Wednesday.

Seven neighborhoods around the outbreak cluster are in lockdown.

Not everyone is locked at home yet, but the shops are closed.

Zhao, local resident:

I don't know how to order vegetables online.

They say it will be delivered to your home but I have no idea how.

I actually always walk to the supermarket, I don't know it any other way.

I have nothing to eat now.”

Helpers try to get food to the people in the closed-off districts over the fences.

But after the experiences in Shanghai, many have doubts as to whether the aid will get through.

Zhao, local resident:

It says I can contact the officials.

But are they interested in me?

I think they only care if I'm positive and then lock me up.

When I see the empty streets, I get really sad.«

China's zero-Covid experiment continues in the capital - with an open outcome.
