Despite talks with the USA, Turkey is initially sticking to its position of blocking the process for Finland and Sweden to join NATO.

He once again made Turkey's position on the northern expansion of the military alliance clear to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said this to the Turkish press on Wednesday evening (May 18, 2022) after a meeting with Blinken.

Basically, Çavuşoğlu rates the talks with his US colleague as "extremely positive".

Blinken said Turkey's concerns were legitimate, Çavuşoğlu said.

In view of this attitude, Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock appealed to Ankara's sense of responsibility.

"I think at this moment everyone knows about their responsibility in such a difficult situation," the Greens politician replied succinctly to a question in New York on Wednesday, without explicitly naming Turkey.

NATO accession: USA "confident" of finding a solution in the dispute with Turkey

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is critical of Sweden and Finland joining NATO and is threatening to veto it.

Luxembourg's Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn then accused Erdogan of haggling over their accession and described the Turkish President's veto threat as a "bazaar mentality".

In the ZDF morning magazine, Asselborn recalled bazaars in Turkey: "And sometimes the mentality, especially Erdogan's, is also shaped by it." Ankara could not accept the responsibility of denying Sweden and Finland membership, Asselborn continued .
