Gruber Straße in Poing is one of the busiest and most accident-prone inner-city streets in the district.

In two years there should be wider sidewalks and cycle paths.

Poing/district – Wider footpaths and cycle paths on both sides of Gruber Straße in Poing: that is the aim of a district project.

It is about the section between the large roundabout in the west and Alte Gruber Straße (near the Vauhaus) in the east, a distance of around one kilometer.

Details were now presented at the meeting of the district environmental committee.

The district and thus the district council is responsible for this district road.

Poing: High number of accidents on Gruber Straße

There are two reasons for the project: On the one hand, this part of the through road in Poing, District Road 1, is one of the most accident-prone roads in the district.

North of the road there is a footpath and cycle path that can be used in two directions.

This and the many entrances and exits to commercial properties create a high risk potential for cyclists.

"Unfortunately, this is also reflected in the high number of accidents involving bicycles," says the district office.

On the other hand, Gruber Strasse is part of the planned express cycle route from Munich to Markt Schwaben.

This means corresponding requirements for the cycle paths.

By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular Ebersberg newsletter.

In the course of the overall project, the roadway on Gruber Strasse could also be upgraded.

According to the expert, its structure dates back to 1994. Around 15,400 vehicles are currently on the road there every day, one of the busiest inner-city roads in the Ebersberg district.

According to forecasts, the burden will increase in the coming years.

According to the expert, the road structure no longer corresponds to the load.

The project has been discussed for a long time.

In the past year, various meetings of the district office and the municipality of Poing as well as an on-site visit took place.

The district commissioned a feasibility study.

One of the premises: The project should be implemented without additional land acquisition.

That would also be difficult, according to the expert.

The solution: The required areas are to be “pinched off” from the roadway.

But there is still enough space.

Poing: Footpaths and cycle paths up to three meters wide

The study, which has now been presented to the district environmental committee, found that footpaths and cycle paths on both sides of the road are mostly possible with a width of three meters.

But there will also be a bottleneck with a smaller width.

Crossing aids can be installed in the area of the roadway.

The cost of a full expansion is estimated at around 2.8 million euros.

The municipality of Poing would have to pay part, namely for the future southern footpath and cycle path, the significantly larger remainder of the financing is the responsibility of the district.

However, high state subsidies are in prospect, the district office informed.

A slimmed-down version would cost an estimated around 1.4 million euros.

Now a planning office is to be commissioned.

If this happens in time, a call for tenders could take place in the winter of 2023/24.

The project could then be structurally implemented in 2024.

Committee advocates remodeling

In principle, the project was welcomed by the Environment Committee.

At the same meeting, but with a different item on the agenda, the committee voted in favor of a declaration of intent with the state capital of Munich and the district of Munich on a cycle expressway from Munich to Markt Schwaben.

This project should be taken into account in the planning in Poing, district councilor Bianka Poschenrieder (SPD) warned at the committee meeting.

"Not that we have to be active again in two years." It is possible to take this into account in the course of detailed planning, according to Martin Riedl from the district office.

And District Administrator Robert Niedergesäß (CSU) remarked: "We are still at the level of a feasibility study."

Green District Councilor Thomas von Sarnowski pointed out that a width of three meters could lead to conflicts between pedestrians and cyclists.

That's not a bike lane.

Nevertheless, the Greens would welcome the project in Poing.

You need a quick solution now, he argues.
