- Were you surprised by Russia's invasion of Ukraine?

You have long supported a rapprochement between Europe and Russia, haven't you underestimated the danger represented by Putin?

- I was surprised, yes, because this decision is so contrary to the interests of Russia, so contrary to the reality of what can be observed in Ukraine, that I did not imagine that Vladimir Putin was going to make a decision so fatal and so contrary to the commitments he had made elsewhere.

So yes, I was surprised, but I do not regret having sought to avoid such an outcome.

The whole meaning of my commitment was to prevent the evolution of a conflict, temporarily and badly frozen through the Minsk agreements, into a hot war.

I thought it was possible to avoid it, the Minsk agreements were a good way, but it must be remembered that these agreements provided for the granting of cultural and administrative freedoms to the regions...
