Due to a lack of staff, the municipality of Haar has to close its indoor swimming pools.

The swimmers should switch to the outdoor pool.

Haar

- The two indoor swimming pools in Haar must be temporarily closed.

The reason for this is the lack of lifeguards, who are hardly available after two years of the coronavirus pandemic.

The city hall in Haar reports that the administration is "frantically" looking for seasonal workers.

From May 23rd to June 19th inclusive, the St. Konrad baths and the indoor swimming pool on Jagdfeldring will be closed.

"Three positions for lifeguards are vacant," says pool manager Sante Ciavarella.

"The four-week closure is therefore unavoidable."

Lifeguards have apparently looked for other jobs

Indoor pool fans can at least switch to the outdoor pool in Haar, which remains open.

However, with reduced opening hours: the public bath is open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. – in any weather, the municipality assures.

The outdoor pool actually opens at 7 a.m.

But there is a lack of staff even to ensure that the regular opening times in the outdoor pool are observed.

"Before the corona pandemic, seasonal workers were easy to find," says Ute Dechent from the community.

Because of the months of closures during the past two years of the pandemic, the lifeguards would probably have looked for another job.

The municipality usually advertises vacancies at the end of winter for additional jobs in the summer.

It is mostly people from the area who apply for the positions;

such as ski instructors with lifeguard training who specifically want to work in pools during the summer months, according to Dechent.

They are obviously no longer available.

Looking for new professionals

The municipal administration is therefore looking for new specialists - also in unusual ways.

Three trained lifeguards have offered at least hourly assistance, and one has already been hired.

In addition, nine high school graduates from the Ernst-Mach-Gymnasium reported that they would take the lifeguard exam, reports the administration.

The water rescue organization DLRG has promised to enable practical training and the exam in a timely manner.

Applicants must have completed lifeguard training;

the municipality pays a good 15 euros per hour.
