Mentally ill man stabs roommate to death - and goes back to bed

Because he is said to have killed his roommate with numerous stitches, a 53-year-old must answer before the Regensburg Regional Court.
Regensburg – "Dead" was the word that a social worker in Regensburg could just make out on the phone when she called one of her protégés in a assisted living community on Brahmsstrasse last October.
What the then notified police found a little later in the apartment has been busy with the jury chamber at the Regensburg Regional Court since this week.

53-year-old Jakob T. (name changed) is accused of killing his roommate with numerous stabs, either with a knife or scissors.
The man suffers from schizophrenia.
He can't remember what happened.
When the officers entered the apartment and found the lifeless body in the hallway, Jakob T. was lying asleep in his bed and first had to be woken up.
He hardly reacted to the police officers' questions, as if he "didn't really understand" "what we want from him," said one of the officers in court.
He is then said to have said incoherently: "I'm a pig." Even at the police station, he was hardly responsive, but at some point claimed that he had heard voices.

Michael Hammer is now primarily concerned with the question of T's criminal responsibility.
In the security proceedings, the public prosecutor's office has so far assumed that Jakob T. is incapacitated due to his illness and must be permanently accommodated in a psychiatric clinic under Section 63 of the Criminal Code.
On Tuesday, May 17, the court dealt a lot with the history of the shared flat and the relationship that T. had with his roommate.
In 2019, the 53-year-old moved to Tim K. (name changed).
As Jakob T's brother explained in court, the accused had completed an apprenticeship at Siemens in his youth and could have made a career in the company at the time.
At some point, however, he first became conspicuous in his early 20s.
"He felt persecuted by a colleague and quit overnight," said the witness.
From then on, chronic schizophrenia flared up again and again.

The witness speaks of fisticuffs and a knife that is said to have played a role.
His own family had become more and more burdened by this almost unpredictable behavior.
He just couldn't do it any more, the brother explains at some point and seems to want to justify the fact that he then broke off contact with Jakob T. from 2004 onwards.

In the courtroom, the two brothers see each other again for the first time in many years.
For several seconds, the two just look at each other without saying a word.
Later the brother will leave the room without a word.
"One will not be able to better understand what happened," says the presiding judge, Dr.
Michael Hammer.
The Chamber has the impression that Jakob T. does not understand that either.
Victim's sister: shared apartment in Regensburg developed into friendship
Whether Jakob T's illness is inherited or the result of a serious accident in his childhood, where he was hit by a car and dragged along several meters, his brother is not able to answer either.
A psychiatric report should bring clarity here.
Meanwhile, the victim's sister is also being questioned on Tuesday.
The chamber wanted to prevent the dead person from getting too much out of sight, judge Hammer justified this procedure.
The sister speaks of a flat-sharing community that gradually developed into a friendship.
She didn't notice anything unusual either, and she called her brother every evening.
A social worker and the accused's legal adviser cannot explain the bloody deed either.
Both men had their own way and generally lived for themselves, and there were also the typical flat share problems.
Otherwise they got along well with each other.
In the run-up to the crime, no mental abnormalities were found in the accused.

"I just don't understand why," says the victim's sister when Jakob T. finally apologizes to her.
According to his lawyer Shervin Ameri, he too is still suffering from the crime today.
He lost his best friend as a result.
But the process, which continues on Thursday, will not be able to clarify the question of why.
