The coming Saturday should be a day of celebration for the "City of Freedom Rights": Then the "Memminger Freedom Prize 1525" will be awarded for the fifth time.

Memmingen - Saturday, May 21, 2022, should be a day of celebration in the "City of Freedom Rights".

Mayor Manfred Schilder will present the journalist and author Prof. Dr.

Award Heribert Prantl the "Memminger Freedom Prize 1525" for his services to freedom of the press.

The award is endowed with 15,000 euros and is being presented for the 5th time. 

After the Freedom Prize was awarded in 2016 because of the renovation of the Martinskirche on the market square at the time, this year people are returning to St. Martin for the ceremony.

After a welcome by Lord Mayor Manfred Schilder and short greetings by Dean Christoph Schieder and Herbert Müller MdL aD, Chairman of the Board of Trustees "12 Peasant Articles - Memminger Freedom Prize 1525", Dr.

Kathrin Mädler, director of the Landestheater Schwaben, read from the twelve articles.

The eulogy for the award winner will be held by former Bundestag President Norbert Lammert.

The ceremony will be musically performed by church music director Hans-Eberhard Roß on the organ and the St. Martin Wind Choir under the direction of Rolf Spitz.



Ceremony in the Martinskirche

The ceremony for the award ceremony, which will take place from 11 a.m. in the Martinskirche, will be simultaneously broadcast on a large screen on the Weinmarkt.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. there will be a colorful stage program and the first Memmingen market of possibilities.

21 clubs, institutions and initiatives focus on the topic of "freedom" in a variety of creative ways.

The market stretches from Roßmarkt via Weinmarkt to Manghausplatz.

Free tickets

The award ceremony will culminate in a festive concert in St. Martin (5 p.m.) under the direction of church music director Hans-Eberhard Roß with Julia Rinderle on the piano, the extended concert choir St. Martin and the Bodensee-Oberschwaben Chamber Philharmonic.

Among other things, the choral fantasy op. 80 by Ludwig van Beethoven with a text by former Bundestag President Norbert Lammert “Let us fight for Europe” and the 9th symphony, 3rd and 4th movements with the “Ode to Joy” can be heard.
