With thousands of coins of ten and a half shekels, this is how a kosher supervisor in Haifa paid the fine imposed on him in court today.
After losing the lawsuit against the Haifa Religious Council, Kashrut Supervisor Yitzhak Shear Yashuv arrived at the Religious Council yesterday (Wednesday) to pay the payment with a small amount of money, tens of cents and half a shekel, raised by him and the other Mashgiachim in Haifa.
"I collected penny for penny and shekel for shekel to finance the fine," he claims, "because we are not willing to be slaves of the system."
The payment of the fine is the end of a saga that began several months ago, when a group of kosher supervisors in the city of Haifa filed an administrative petition against the Haifa Religious Council and the Histadrut workers 'union, alleging violation of employment conditions and a significant change in supervisors' regulations.
The background to the complaint is the opposition of the supervisors to work with a dedicated widget to improve the kashrut system called "Shirat Hayam".
The widget came into use in Haifa after an in-depth examination of restaurants, businesses and various factories revealed that the state of training in the city needed improvement.
Today, kosher supervisors who work in Haifa are obligated to come to every business and stay there as required.
Each supervisor receives a smartphone and is responsible for supervising a certain number of food businesses, and through the widget you can verify that the supervisor has indeed visited the businesses under his supervision and monitor the supervisor's activities.
In addition, the widget allows training consumers to test their business by scanning a code.
The Haifa District Court heard the supervisors' petition and rejected it - and even ordered the supervisors to pay a total of NIS 12,000, legal expenses to the religious council and the Histadrut.
The Haifa Religious Council reports: "About six months ago, four Mashgiachim petitioned the court against the Religious Council and the Histadrut, claiming that the application of the reporting obligation in the Shirat Hayam online system violates their working conditions. The court rejected the petition "We pay them in an annoying way. We will note that this is a technology system dedicated to kosher that aims to improve the kosher system in the city of Haifa."
