Riots in Meron: Extremist ultra-Orthodox broke through a police checkpoint today (Thursday) and infiltrated the Rashbi tomb complex.
Northern District Central Unit police officers who were in covert activity operated in the area, and when they made a number of arrests, dozens of youths began attacking detectives and throwing objects and stones at them until more police forces arrived on the scene.
Two policemen were lightly injured and evacuated for medical treatment.
The police said: "The behavior of law-breaking extremists is being taken very seriously, trying in every possible way to sabotage the revelry. Damage to infrastructure, beyond harming the event and causing anguish to the celebrants.
"We will act resolutely in order to enable the routine of prayers and preparations in the place and will take a tough hand against those lawbreakers."
