Heavy thunderstorms are brewing in NRW on Thursday, May 19th.

Storm NRW: On Thursday it will be uncomfortable - sometimes violent thunderstorms with heavy rain, hurricane gusts and hail are possible in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Cologne – After the fine weather phase with temperatures of almost 30 degrees, it will be rainy and stormy in North Rhine-Westphalia from Thursday, May 19th.

As the German Weather Service (DWD) reports, strong thunderstorms are to be expected on Thursday, especially in western Germany.

Heavy rain, hail, squalls and hurricane-like gusts are possible throughout NRW.

Locally, heavy rain of 40 millimeters per square meter could fall in a short time on Thursday.

The hailstones can be about 3 centimeters in size, and heavy gusts of wind and hurricanes are also possible, according to the German Weather Service.

On this day, you should watch out for falling branches and objects and, as a precaution, secure loose objects on the balcony, such as flower pots.

Thunderstorm Thursday: Thunderstorm, hail, heavy rain, storm - where it gets uncomfortable

  • Thursday, May 19:

    From midday, severe thunderstorms with hail (larger than 2 centimeters), heavy rain (up to 40 liters per square meter) and hurricane-force gusts (up to 125 km/h) are possible throughout NRW.

    The thunderstorms in eastern Sauerland will be less severe.

  • Friday, May 20:

    Thunderstorms are still possible, especially in the afternoon and evening.

"The first showers will appear on Thursday morning, the storm with storm, heavy rain and hail will pick up between 12 and 2 p.m.," said Nadine Schittko, meteorologist at the DWD to 24RHEIN.

There is potential for severe weather throughout NRW – the region in eastern Sauerland is a little less affected.

There, too, "heavy rain of 25 ml per square meter and heavy gusts of wind up to 100 km/h" can occur, the meteorologist continues.

How badly which region in NRW was affected by the storms cannot be said at the moment.

In general, however, hurricane-force gusts of up to 125 km/h, heavy rain of up to 40 liters per square meter and coarse-grained hail must be expected.

According to the DWD, the storm is not over on Friday.

Showers and thunderstorms will continue to occur, especially in the afternoon and evening.

On the night of Saturday, however, the showers and thunderstorms will move towards the southeast.

Storm NRW: Temperature drop at the weekend

According to the current status, there will be no severe thunderstorms at the weekend - but the temperatures will drop significantly to between 18 and 22 degrees.

However, the German Weather Service has already announced thunderstorms again for the coming week.

On Monday, May 23rd, there should be heavy thunderstorms in the west with heavy rain, hail and stormy gusts.

More thunderstorms are also possible on Tuesday, May 24th.
