The only original wine bar owned by Gabriel von Seidl can be found on Tölzer Marktstraße.

That's why a © from 1905 also serves as a large-format decorative picture at the tavern exhibition in Regensburg.

The Schwaighofer wine tavern in the Tölzer Marktstraße becomes a showpiece at the Bavarian exhibition in the House of Bavarian History in Regensburg.

Bad Tölz –

Hard to believe: in 1960 there were still around 23,700 businesses in Bavaria, in 2020 there were only 3,700. Maybe it was because the blood alcohol limit for drivers was still 1.5 at the time.

This is one of many interesting aspects that the House of Bavarian History in Regensburg is investigating in the latest Bavaria exhibition.

"Inn dying?

Wirtshausleben!” is the name of the show that was recently opened.

And again Tölz is represented at one of the major exhibitions of the House of Bavarian History.

The guild bar of the Tölz beer brewers was shown at the brewery exhibition in Aldersbach on the subject of 500 years of the Purity Law.

The extensively restored, more than 300-year-old portechaise of the Tölz City Museum was one of "100 treasures from 1000 years" of Bavaria's history in 2019 (we reported).

In 2022, a Tölz exhibit can also be seen at the Bavarian Exhibition, the little brother of the State Exhibition, and quite large in format.

A photo from the Süddeutsche Bauzeitung from 1905, enlarged as a spatial background, shows the Schwaighofer wine tavern in the Tölzer Marktstrasse.

It is presented as an example of the cozy and tasteful architecture of the Bavarian inns around 1900.

Perfectly staged comfort

She is indeed something special.

The wine tavern run today by Claus and Hannes Janßen is considered to be the only original tavern created by Gabriel von Seidl (1848 – 1913).

The famous master builder from Munich left nothing to chance in order to bring the Heimatstil he had created to its full effect: the dark paneling, the surrounding bench, the stucco work on the ceiling and, as the exhibition organizers write, "a shell niche that subtly accentuates the room". were supplemented by "ingredients" such as deer antlers, prints with hunting motifs and a portrait of King Ludwig II.

Incidentally, all of these Alpine ingredients could also be ordered from a catalog from Seidl's furniture and decorative arts manufactory.

When Gabriel von Seidl created the wine bar in 1896, he already had extensive experience as an inn architect.

As early as 1880 he had built the Deutsches Haus restaurant in Munich and – his trademark – mixed various architectural styles with a light hand.

Decades later, the Bavarian Association of Architects and Engineers judged that it "showed an exemplary path" with its perfectly staged coziness.

Exhibition in the House of Bavarian History in Regensburg

The fact that this wine bar still exists today is noted in several historical specialist books.

Local historian Claus Janßen also worked with the House of Bavarian History on the exhibition in Aldersbach.

On request, he can also tell some interesting side stories: In 125 years, the existence of the wine bar has never been questioned by the owners.

But during the war, on May 1, 1945, an American tank shell hit the property and severely damaged the front large wine bar (today a shop).

A few years ago, Janssen reports with a grin, the fast-food company McDonald's asked him whether they wanted to rent out the business space in the middle of the pedestrian zone.

"I answered that it stays with McSchwaighofer..." (Christoph Schnitzer)
