The horseshoe staircase of Fontainebleau regains its brilliance

After three years of work, the castle's emblem is no longer in danger. A concert and a sound and light show are organized on Saturday May 21 around the work, to celebrate its return to the tour circuit.


It has been restored and cleaned step by step, for three years, and is now as fresh as it was in the 17th century.

Emblem of the castle and once the scene of great court ceremonies, the horseshoe staircase of Fontainebleau has left its sad hue, which turned black, slippery on rainy days.

When you enter the main courtyard, you can now only see it, preceding the entrance to the royal apartments, which visitors will be able to use again this weekend.

Dating from 1632, the staircase once allowed a royal or imperial climb to the castle.

From the reign of Louis XIV, it is on this staircase that were welcomed the princesses coming to marry a son of France.

Symmetrical and balanced, it allowed a slow rise to the terrace, where the court and the guests stood.

Louis XV and Marie Leszczynska took it in 1725, before heading to the royal chapel to get married there.

It is also from there that Napoleon bade farewell to his guard...
