When two Breton farmers decide to set up their own short circuit brand

FIGARO TOMORROW - Two Breton families opened a store at the end of April bringing together products from suppliers located less than 50km from their home. An ultra-local approach.

It all started with a simple observation: in their town of 2,200 inhabitants, located in Finistère, there had been no butchery for more than ten years.

The inhabitants, however, remained very attached to meat.

Two farming families have decided to tackle the problem head-on by creating their own brand of farm products.

Their goal: to create a place where many producers in the region could make their products available.

The specificity of the store they opened at the end of April is therefore to offer products from producers located 80% within a maximum radius of 50km.

Another major characteristic: there is no intermediary between the producer and the store.

The goal is to avoid going through the supermarkets often criticized by farmers because of the sometimes large margins they make on their products.

On the kilo of meat we will earn 50 to 70 cents.

Knowing that an animal represents approximately 500 kg of meat, we therefore arrive at a capital gain of 350 to 400 euros per animal.

explains Jean-Jacques Breton, co-founder of the store.

The store's offer is very diverse: fruit and vegetables, meat and charcuterie, dairy... But the brand also offers a selection of wines and beers, cosmetics and ultra-local household products.

Today we work with 63 producers, and many more contact us every day.

proudly adds Jean-Jacques Breton.

Longer term goals

But for the two families, this store remains a secondary project.

It comes on top of personal activities that work well, no strong profitability is expected.

Les Terroirs de l'Elorn is above all a “

project whose aim is to be transmitted, a generational project.

“ Jean-Jacques Breton, however, regrets the lack of aid provided by local authorities: “

When you create jobs, and specifically in a rural municipality, you expect to receive aid for job creation.

Without our eligibility for the recovery plan, we would not have had any subsidies.

That's a shame.

This new business has in fact made it possible to create new jobs: four people in their twenties have recently been hired by the brand.

The realization of this project is also a delight for the inhabitants of the town, as evidenced by Justine Le Menn, manufacturer of artisanal jams and caramels, who offers her products in the new shop: "

In the city center everyone talks about it , everybody is happy.
