Police have opened an investigation into a fire incident at the warehouses of the Bitan Wines branch in Jerusalem on suspicion of arson - for the second time, after the place was set on fire for the first time at the end of 2021.

Following an intensive investigation last year, several suspects were arrested and indictments were filed against several involved.

But last week, when the main defendant in the arson, Nachman Shabtai, 28, from Jerusalem, was behind bars until the end of the proceedings, the chain's branch was set on fire for the second time.

His defense attorney, Adv. Ariel Atari

, claimed that from the outset the charges attributed to his client were unfounded, and announced that he was expected to appeal to the Supreme Court against the decision to keep him in custody.

A report was received at the District Control Center about a fire in the 'Pavilion Wines' supermarket in the Neve Ya'akov neighborhood, above which is a six-story residential building.

Firefighters and rescue crews who arrived at the incident discovered that the writer had been burned to the ground and heavy smoke was rising towards the apartments in the residential building.

The shift commander, Rabbi Reshef Shlomi Harush, described that "the fire raged and spread, six fire and rescue crews acted in three areas: one treating the occupants who were asked to stay in a safe place from smoke inhalation, the other penetrating the counter and extinguishing the fire, and the third extinguishing the fire."

He said, "A preliminary investigation raises a suspicion of arson. An investigation has been opened in cooperation with the police to investigate the circumstances of the incident."

According to the indictment filed against Saturn, on December 2, 2021 he met with several people, who together conspired to harm a supermarket, including through arson.

Later, in the late evening, Saturn arrived with a man he knew and his partner at the supermarket, so Saturn began to climb the wall, uprooted a supermarket security camera and tried to break another camera.

This, while his friend and partner are standing nearby.

Next, Saturn threw a bottle of flammable material past the supermarket window and set the place on fire.

As a result of the ignition, damage was caused to the goods and the building in the estimated amount of NIS 50,000.

Since his arrest and the filing of the indictment against him, Saturn has been imprisoned behind bars and claims through his lawyer that he was indicted and was not at the scene of the arson at all.

Attorney Ariel Atari, representing the young man accused of arson in December, responded, "My client claimed from the first moment that he had nothing to do with setting the supermarket on fire and that whoever was responsible for the arson was roaming free.

He added that "in the coming days there will be a hearing in my client's case in the Supreme Court and I have no doubt that the Supreme Court will order his release from detention."

The Israel Police stated that "thanks to a professional investigation conducted following a suspicion of setting fire to a business in late 2021, in which a variety of actions were carried out, a suspect was arrested and after establishing an evidentiary basis, the indictment was filed in court.

In recent days, another case has occurred that is currently under investigation and naturally it is not possible to elaborate on it.

We will continue to investigate each incident professionally while gathering findings and evidence in order to arrive at an investigation of the truth and exhaust the law with the perpetrators. "
