The activities of a workshop on preparing a national policy for digital accessibility for people with disabilities in Syria, which is being held by the Ministry of Communications and Technology in cooperation with the Economic and Social Committee for Western Asia (ESCWA), was launched today in the meeting room of the Syrian Telecom Company.

The workshop, which is the first of its kind in Syria, discusses the national plans for disability and the draft national policy for digital accessibility, as the Ministry of Communications and Technology began working on preparing the national policy for digital access, in cooperation with ESCWA, since last September to create the appropriate environment to facilitate access by persons with disabilities to sites, platforms, public services, and electronic applications, and to create content. diverse and appropriate and enable them to use it in improving the quality of life.

Adviser to the Minister of Communications and Technology, Dr. Ebaa Oueishek, indicated in the ministry’s speech during the opening of the workshop that digital accessibility, which is concerned with the ability of persons with disabilities to access digital services and benefit from them optimally, constitutes a great support for achieving the national strategy for digital transformation by enabling the largest segment to benefit from it.

In his turn, the Director of the Statistics, Technology and Information Society Group at ESCWA, Dr. Haidar Farhat, explained in his speech via Skype from ESCWA headquarters in Beirut that the topic and timing of the workshop are very important for integrating the segment of people with disabilities and enabling them to access digital services, stressing that ESCWA experts have a lot of enthusiasm to work in Syria and are looking forward to To provide more services to the Syrians.

It is noteworthy that Syria signed in 2007 the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which was approved by the United Nations in 2006.
