For thousands of people, Prince Charles and Diana's marriage was a dream wedding.
The fact that the prince made a confession to his bride the night before the wedding remained unknown for a long time.
London – Charles (73) and Diana (36, † 1997) played the happy wedding couple for the cameras.
But behind the palace walls it boiled and boiled.
The young bride's feelings in particular were on a rollercoaster ride.
If you believe the words of a friend, the marriage almost never happened.
Charles' confession the night before the marriage caused the fairy tale of great love to collapse irrevocably like a house of cards.

On July 29, 1981, wedding bells rang for the Prince of Wales and his bride Diana Spencer.
Penny Thornton, 76, an astrologer whom Diana later sought advice from, made a startling revelation on the ITV documentary 'The Diana Interview: Revenge of the Princess'.

A cruel confession should have plunged the 19-year-old into a deep conflict.
Her love was trampled on because her dream man made it absolutely clear to her that someone else had long owned his heart.
"One of the most shocking things Princess Diana told me was that the night before the wedding, Charles told her he didn't love her," Thornton says in the documentary, based on Diana's scandalous 1995 BBC interview after her split from Charles.
When interviewer Martin Bashir (59) asked Princess Diana if Camilla (74) was a "factor" in the breakdown of the marriage, Diana replied with the now famous sentence: "Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded." ("Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.").
Queen Elizabeth II (96) has long grudged Duchess Camilla that her son was not open to marriage, she just wanted to get rid of Camilla for a long time.
Charles and Diana: Prince Philip tried to bring Prince Charles to reason
Jenny Thornton suspects that the then-lover and now-wife of the heir to the throne was the reason for Charles' candid words before their wedding night.
She believes Charles "didn't want to go into the wedding with false assumptions."
According to People, she goes on to say that following this "devastating" revelation, the young bride considered calling off the elaborately planned wedding.
But she played along and had to accept the humiliation that Camilla was sitting in St. Paul's Cathedral on her big day and was allowed to feel privately superior to her.

Prince Charles may also have been anything but happy with the circumstances that ended his free life.
Royal biographer Ingrid Seward (74) reports that the son "felt pressure" from his father Prince Philip (99, † 2021) to marry Diana.
Seward writes in Us Weekly: "He told some friends that he felt pressured to marry Diana" because Philip had said he had to marry Diana or let her go.
He couldn't fool a young girl.
“She is only 19 years old.
You can't stall them'”, he is said to have talked into Charles' conscience, who accepted his fate with open eyes.
