With the planning for the redesign of the Sonnengraben and the Himmelsleiter we now go into detail.

The building committee considered what the lighting concept could look like.

The lighting is to be significantly improved - also so as not to bother residents and to protect insects.

Schongau – This time the city councilors met in the Ballenhaus at a time that was quite unusual for the building and environmental committee, namely in the evening.

The reason: A site inspection after the meeting at the Sonnengraben.

In the first section along the city wall from the police tower along the city wall in a westerly direction, but also on the important connecting staircase from the fairground up towards the old town, additional lamps are being installed and the older ones are being replaced at the same time.

This implements a new lighting concept, because the city wall is to be highlighted at prominent points, even if not consistently.

It's about better perception.

Light pollution should be avoided

During the meeting, Markus Tuppen and Stefan Vetter from the “Day & Light Lichtplanung” office in Munich explained what is important to them.

The priority is to avoid unnecessary light pollution: 70 to 80 percent of the light that was previously emitted could be reduced.

"Some of the lights have a very wide beam," says Tuppen.

As Vetter later explained on site, the previous lamps were simply no longer up to date.

The top spotlight, for example on the Himmelsleiter, which is directed towards the city wall, also fully illuminates the treetop behind it and at the same time shines into the windows of the residents.

Ultimately, the power savings should also be decent, because instead of the previous 180 watts, only 24 watt radiators are used.

Tuppen: “There should be an effect, but we want to approach it in a subtle, reduced way.

Concentrating light instead of dazzling: The previous lighting was put to the test, additional lamps are planned.

Path around the city wall with lighting in the future

Many Schongauers should be happy if there will be path lighting around the city wall in the future, which is now to be implemented for the first phase of renovation.

The lighting on the then redesigned sun terrace on the Sonnengraben will be renewed.

"This is not a place that should be brightly lit, but that could become a kind of open-air living room," Tuppen described it to the members of the building committee.

You can place a “very personal light”, which can be achieved with a mast that is only 2.50 meters high.

"The disadvantage: there is a risk of vandalism because the heater is easily accessible."

Another improvement: The lighting should not dazzle as far as possible, only serve as an orientation for the viewer.

"Additional islands of light should create a lively place that is inviting, not monotonous," says Tuppen.

What was particularly welcomed: the passage of the police tower will also be illuminated in the future.

"At the moment it is only illuminated from the inside, which is currently not a good transition into the urban space," says Tuppen.

The fountain to the left of the police officer's tower is also to be "staged".

"Safe and balanced lighting for people and animals"

Kornelia Funke summed it up during the discussion that followed: "It's about warm, safe, balanced lighting for people and animals, while respecting the historical building structure," said the CSU city councillor.

However, there should not be continuous lighting along the path.

Especially for the animal world, birds and insects, there should be so-called "dark corridors", with less lighting in some sections.

During the on-site inspection, the building committee also decided to have it checked whether additional night-time lowering at a later time was feasible.

The redesign of the Sonnengraben is planned for spring 2023.
