The Hong Kong government's "Budget" earlier announced the sugar distribution measures, including providing a $1,000 electricity subsidy to the residential customers of the two electricity companies.

A spokesman for the Hong Kong government said that the new round of electricity tariff subsidies will be implemented from June this year, and each eligible residential electricity user account will receive a subsidy of $1,000 to relieve the economic pressure faced by the public amid the epidemic.

The subsidy will be injected into the account in 12 instalments. The government will inject a subsidy of 80 yuan into the electric residential user accounts of CLP or HK Electric on the first day of each month for 11 consecutive months from June, and inject a subsidy of 120 yuan in the 12th month. A total of 1,000 yuan.

The relief measure is expected to involve government expenditure of about $2.8 billion, benefiting about 2.8 million eligible residential users.

A spokesman for the Hong Kong government pointed out that the subsidy amount of the new round of electricity bills subsidy scheme can be used to pay the electricity bill of the household together with the unspent balance of the subsidy under the previous six rounds of similar schemes.

Any unused subsidy can be carried forward to future months to cover the electricity bill until 31 December 2024, or as indicated on the account statement at the end of the account.

The electricity bills for residential users issued by the two power companies will reflect the subsidies injected by the government.

For account enquiries, users can call the CLP Customer Service Hotline at 2678 2678 or the HK Electric Customer Service Hotline at 2887 3411.

Sustained high fuel prices subsidy slightly eases the increase in actual fuel costs of the two power companies

Recently, the international fuel price has remained high due to factors such as the Russian-Ukrainian war. The newly obtained electricity subsidies for citizens may be eroded by the increase in fuel costs.

The two power companies updated the fuel adjustment fee for May earlier. HK Electric surged from 27.3 cents in January this year to 47.1 cents in May, an increase of 72.5%; CLP also recorded a 12% increase.

In terms of overall electricity bills, based on a typical three-person household with 275 kWh of electricity per month, the electricity bills to be paid by HK Electric users in May increased by 17.8% compared with the beginning of the year, and they need to pay about RMB 54.5 more; while CLP users have to pay about 12.7 Yuan.

Some scholars explained that due to factors such as the Russian-Ukrainian war, fuel costs have been rising in the past few months, especially natural gas, so fuel costs have also been increasing.

Some environmental groups predict that the prices of natural gas and coal from March to April are still on the rise, so there will be no drop in the fuel costs of the two electricity companies in the short term.
