The Peruvian Ministry of Health issued an epidemiological alert to public and private health facilities throughout the country this Friday after the confirmation of 12 cases of monkeypox in countries in Europe and the United States.

The Ministry also reported that although the country has not detected any cases, the health authorities seek to be able to identify, notify and investigate in time those that could occur in Peru.

The Center for Epidemiology, Prevention and Disease Control (CDC Peru) explained that there are two types of virus that cause monkeypox.

The first comes from Central Africa and the second, which is a milder and self-limiting disease, from West Africa.

The document through which the Ministry of Health issues the alert states that "medical professionals must report any compatible case of monkeypox to those responsible for epidemiology in health establishments."

On Thursday, the Minister of Health, Jorge López, announced that the alert would be issued to be prepared "in the face of any eventuality" and pointed out that the possibility of buying vaccines against this smallpox is being evaluated.
