A chestnut is to give way for the renovation of Bairawieser Straße.

A five-year-old from Tölzer wants to transplant it instead and works with his father to preserve the tree.

Bad Tölz

– Will five-year-old Leopold, called Poldi, become the youngest tree rescuer in Tölz?

The boy had an idea that could ensure the preservation of a chestnut tree at the intersection of Bairawieser Strasse and Höhenbergstrasse.

Background: The announced renovation of Bairawieser Strasse is to begin next week.

This also includes a redesign of the entrance situation in the corner between Höhenbergstrasse, Jahnstrasse and Bairawieser Strasse.

According to the plan, a chestnut tree has to go for this.

As Papa Peter Kreitmeier describes, Poldi walks past the tree every day on the way to kindergarten and loves it.

Apparently, apart from the child, “no one thought that the tree could be transplanted instead of felled”.

The boy saw something like that on television.

Papa Peter found a company specializing in transplanting large trees between Ingolstadt and Nuremberg.

Their site manager has agreed to support the tree rescue and even to postpone other projects if necessary.

Kreitmeir finds it “fantastic”.

According to the 36-year-old, the cost of planting the chestnut, its "temporary parking" and replanting as soon as a new green strip has been created for it is 9,000 euros.

Costs for planting out, "intermediate parking" and replanting: around 9000 euros

Kreitmeir turned to Mayor Ingo Mehner with the proposal.

When asked by the Tölzer Kurier, he was not averse in principle – he just didn’t think it was justifiable that the city would bear the costs of 9,000 euros.

The head of the town hall initially points out that the redesign will make the crossing area safer and more family and child-friendly.

"So it's not the classic case: bad road against good tree," says Mehner.

In principle, it is planned to replace the chestnut tree with the planting of two new fruit trees - which would go well with the line that the city has also planted fruit trees next to the bouldering hall on the Flinthöhe and that there is a new project on old fruit varieties at the Schmidl house (see page 3).

Mayor praises initiative

"But I find it very nice and impressive when a child gets involved like this," the mayor praised Poldi's initiative.

But Mehner also reminds that there are around 7,000 trees in Tölz.

The city invests a six-digit amount every year in their care and maintenance.

As mayor, he has to maintain a certain objectivity and cannot simply promise a sum of money for a single tree.

However, Kreitmeir mentioned the possibility that the necessary amount could easily be raised through donations.

Mehner thought that was a good thing.

"If there is so much civic engagement for this, it would be a great thing to go this way."

Kreitmeier had not imagined it quite like that.

"In an emergency, I wouldn't be above going around with the collection bag," he says.

But he doesn't hope "that the city will give itself the vulnerability to pass on the costs".

From his point of view, the amount is "manageable" - and on the other hand, the city saves costs for the felling and disposal of the chestnut and for the new planting.

That's why he has now formulated a formal application to the city council for the assumption of costs.
