Wang Yuan, Assistant Professor of the Department of Media and Communication, City University of Hong Kong, and Cui Yongkang, Head of the Department of Applied Social Sciences, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, conducted the research to analyze 341 articles published on Hong Kong online media platforms from January 23 to September 1, 2020 Minority-related news stories, and 7,381 comments posted by its readers, and recruited 250 ethnic minority Hong Kong residents to participate in an online survey in June 2021.

Three news articles use derogatory or biased words

The study found that only one online news report contained racial bias, stereotypes or discrimination on racial issues, accounting for about 0.3%; at the same time, three news articles used derogatory or biased words, accounting for 0.9%.

Among the 7,381 reader comments on this type of news, 348 comments involved racial bias, stereotypes or discrimination, accounting for 4.7%; at the same time, 315 comments used derogatory or biased words when describing ethnic minorities, accounting for 4.7%. 4.3%.

In addition, the study revealed that with regard to the tone of news reports and their readers' comments, 96.2% of news reports and 94.2% of readers' comments used a neutral tone, while only 1.2% of reports and 4.9% of comments used a negative tone about minorities.
