The Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Project of the Branch of the Badia Development, Management and Protection Authority in As-Suwayda plays an important role in studying and developing these plants and preserving their genetic assets to benefit from them in various economic fields.
The project, according to the director of the Authority’s branch, Eng. Omar Karkout, extends over an area of 5 dunums within a pastoral nurturing nursery, and aims to collect a good number of medicinal and aromatic plants in one place to be a nucleus for work in this field more broadly, in addition to being an educational place where the Second College of Agriculture in Sweida She takes her students to the project to introduce these plants.
Karkoot indicated to SANA reporter that the project comes as a necessity to preserve, develop and multiply these plants in order to return them to their original locations, especially with the negative encroachments that the Badia is subjected to from overgrazing and others, in addition to the frequent droughts, the decline in rainfall for several years and its irregularity during the season, all of which led to a decrease Some plants are in their positions and others are receding.
And he indicated that the seeds of the various plants in the project are supplied from several places, including the General Authority for the Development and Administration of the Badia, in addition to collecting some seed samples by the project workers from separate areas in the Badia.
According to the head of the Natural Resources Department in the Authority’s branch, Eng. Amer Areej, the project currently includes more than 20 types of plants, including perennials such as thyme, marjoram, ficus, aromatic cypress, American cabbage, holy galangal, artichoke, lemongrass, white herbal wormwood, lavender, rosemary, sage, sagebrush, beach, prickly pear and bumblebee. And the bride’s bed, citrus, saline, American and bitter melon, in addition to the annual species, so that they are given the necessary care by planting their seeds first in bags and then transporting them to permanent land in preparation for transfer to the Badia.
Areej pointed to the importance of raising awareness of the uses of medicinal and aromatic plants and how to benefit from them economically and medically, expressing the branch's readiness to implement training courses in this field.
