How can the church be changed?

A panel discussion was led by (from left) city pastor Peter Demmelmair (Bad Tölz), Dean Thomas Neuberger (Dietramszell), Prof. Michael Ebertz (Catholic University of Freiburg), community officer Elisabeth Stangassinger (Munich-Westend) and Herbert Konrad (district education center Bad Tölz) .

At a panel discussion about the church in the Tölzer Franzmühle, participants moved away from the demand for women to be ordained priests.

Bad Tölz -

Women in the priesthood: During a panel discussion in the Tölzer Franzmühle on Tuesday evening, this demand was put into perspective - also by Elisabeth Stangassinger, who is a member of "Maria 2.0", the initiative of Catholic women in Germany.

Previously, Prof. Michael Ebertz from the Catholic University in Freiburg had explained the title of his lecture “disempowerment”: He understands power in the church to mean social relationships.

One has something that another desires.

People used to expect salvation and redemption from the church.

In the meantime, this dependency has almost completely dissolved.

Consequently, the question arises as to the meaning of the sacraments and the priests who alone are allowed to administer them.

"The clergy's resulting identity problem is completely unresolved," said the sociologist.

Question about the meaning of the sacraments and the priest arises

City pastor Peter Demmelmair was the first to question the demand of "Maria 2.0": "Are the problems of the church really solved if women are ordained?" He received approval from Dean Thomas Neuberger: "As a result, no more people come," he said.

Ironically, the quarrelsome community officer Elisabeth Stangassinger, who is known to not mince her words, explained: "In the meantime, I share Pastor Demmelmair's doubts, because everything remains the same with it.

Office and hierarchy must fall first.”

Ebertz described a possible "docking point" for the church in society: the personal commitment in everyday life, which gets out of joint through suffering.

He spoke of the conversion of church staff to "pastoral action teams".

Demmelmair agreed.

He reported that he was part of the crisis intervention team when the roof of the ice rink in Bad Reichenhall collapsed in 2006.

15 people died, including twelve children and young people.

"Being there was exceptionally important," the minister said.

However, churchgoers resist the non-consecrated.

During the lockdowns, when time and places at funerals were limited, the Dietramszell community officer supported the dean.

He then learned from a second person that he had been insulted: he was a "coward" because he had not personally conducted "the mother's" funeral.

"What do we want?" Neuberger asked, "beautiful clothes or 30 years of experience in bereavement care?"

After two hours, Herbert Konrad from the Kreisbildungswerk called for all speakers to have a vision of the future Catholic Church.

Stangassinger wished that humanity should come first.

Demmelmair was optimistic about history: the church survived crises like the Reformation and the French Revolution.

Neuberger hoped that people would recognize the message of the Bible as worth living.

Ebertz alone admitted: "I can't just raise hopes like that." The next pope will hardly be Francis II, he said with regard to the international conclave.
