.Landkreis –

For the alcohol campaign week, which took place this week, the Freisinger Tagblatt, in cooperation with the health department, reports on various aspects of alcoholism, a widespread disease.

In an interview with Dagmar Fischer, addiction therapist at the Psychosocial Counseling Center in Freising (Prop e.V.), a person affected describes his addiction.

Alois W. (name changed) is in the aftercare department after inpatient rehabilitation.

Mr. W., would you tell us your age and would you tell us something about yourself?

I am 57 years old, divorced and live in a relationship with my partner here near Freising, have three children and five grandchildren.

What was your journey into alcohol addiction like?

That was a gradual start.

I would say that in the early or mid-1990s, the volume and frequency continued to increase.

Especially when I wanted to relieve my frustration and stress.

They finally turned to the addiction counseling center.

How did this decision come about and what was the way to the Prop advice center?

The first steps I took in that direction were through my family doctor, to a therapist.

That didn't quite work.

And finally I came to Prop-Shop on good advice.

Did you experience yourself as dependent at the time?

I didn't have a good feeling about my alcohol consumption, but was always reassured with sayings like "You drink so little anyway".

That's probably what tempted me not to do as much.

But I kept getting the feeling that something was wrong.

And that's why I tried several times to get the whole thing under control with the help of Prop-Shop.

How was your way out of addiction?

The road was a long one, with many attempts to make it.

Ultimately, my psychotherapist helped me, who only wanted to continue treating me if I went into rehab.

I did it in Taufkirchen for 14 days.

And later in long-term therapy in Wilhemsheim, where my depression and alcohol were treated together.

Ultimately, it was also important that I came out and told everyone around me that I was an alcoholic.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

In hindsight, what was an important finding for you that is still important today - that is, your benefit from the whole story?

I think you have to admit it to yourself when you have a problem, a drinking problem.

You really have to admit that you are an alcoholic, that you are an alcoholic.

And tackle the whole thing actively, let yourself be helped.

You can't do it yourself.

You need help there.

Do you still feel addicted to alcohol today?

You are an alcoholic your whole life, you have to accept it and be careful.

You shouldn't become careless and don't lie to yourself that you can do it after all, or that you have already done it for so long.

And you have to stay on the ball.

I'm an alcoholic, always will be - and I stand by it.

What helps you today not to relapse?

The people around me help me, they all know about it.

My partner knows about it, she helps me.

I am supported by the Prop-Shop self-help group.

All this helps me.

But I just have to keep at it myself.
