Unterallgäu - Alongside climate change, the global extinction of species is one of the major challenges for our society.

The problem does not stop at the Unterallgäu either.

"Countless animal and plant species are on the red list, as is the case throughout Bavaria," says biodiversity consultant Fabienne Finkenzeller.

“Biodiversity is of central importance for people and their health, but also for the economy.” World Biodiversity Day will draw attention to this on Sunday, May 22nd.

Due to the importance of the topic, the district has its own biodiversity advisor in Fabienne Finkenzeller.

Finkenzeller informs farmers, communities and other landowners what they can do to protect biodiversity and why it matters.

She explains: For example, the various wild bee species ensure the pollination of numerous crops.

Important goods such as drinking water, building materials and medicinal substances only existed thanks to the diversity of species.

In addition, according to Finkenzeller, intact habitat complexes - such as the floodplains of the watercourses - protect against flooding and erosion.

Preserving nature for future generations is one of the goals of the Lower Nature Conservation Authority, which is responsible for biodiversity advice.

"But this task can only be achieved together with a large participation of the citizens," says Finkenzeller.

The necessary financial support for services to preserve biodiversity is available through various funding programs from the Free State of Bavaria.

"Those interested have a colorful mix of measures and funding options at their disposal," says the biodiversity consultant.

Interested parties can get non-binding advice from Fabienne Finkenzeller.

At a joint consultation appointment on site, measures tailored to the personal possibilities could be considered.
