The preliminary results of the Australian legislative elections today showed the defeat of Prime Minister Scott Morrison's Conservative Party after nine years in power.
According to estimates published by the Australian ABC channel, after half of the votes were counted, the Labor Party led by Anthony Albanese won the largest number of seats in the Australian House of Representatives, but with only 72 seats so far, it was not confirmed after winning the absolute majority of 76 seats needed to form a government without the need for alliances.
Albanese said Australians "voted for change", vowing to turn Australia into a "great power" in the field of renewable energies.
In a statement, Morrison conceded his defeat and said, "I spoke with the leader of the opposition and the new Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, and I congratulated him on his victory."
The voters, numbering about 17.2 million, chose their representatives, who will occupy 151 seats in the House of Representatives for a period of three years, and 40 of the 76 Senate seats will be renewed for a period of six years.
