The Federal Council has now approved the tank discount.

On Friday, the chamber of states approved the law previously passed by the Bundestag to reduce the energy tax on fuels.

Tank discount: Tax relief for petrol and diesel is higher

According to the government, the tax relief for petrol is just under 30 cents per liter and for diesel it is 14 cents per liter.

At the same time, the tax burden is reduced even further – because value added tax is no longer due on the part of the energy tax that is no longer applicable.

As confirmed by the Federal Ministry of Finance, the total tax relief is 35.2 cents per liter of petrol and 16.7 cents per liter of diesel.

The Bundeskartellamt is supposed to ensure, through stricter requirements for mineral oil companies, that the low taxes also reach consumers.

The federal government expects reduced tax revenues of 3.15 billion euros.

The rebate is part of the government's relief package, which intends to use it to cushion the currently high inflation.
