There has been a housing shortage in Berlin for years, while Vienna is considered a good city for renters. What did Austria do better? Or will rents there soon go through the roof as well?

Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne or Munich: Rents in many major German cities continue to rise.

And even people with a good income are often unable to find apartments simply because there isn't anything on offer.

In Austria, on the other hand, the situation seems comparatively relaxed.

Vienna in particular has long been considered a paradise for tenants.

The reason is urban housing, which is heavily promoted in the Austrian capital.

On the private market, however, prices are also trending upwards here.

Vienna as a rental Mecca?

In this episode of "Inside Austria" we take a look at the housing policy in Austria and Germany: Why are rents in Berlin and other metropolises rising so much while they are still comparatively affordable in Vienna?

We ask what lies behind these differences and whether Germany can learn something from its neighboring country.

And we want to know whether the situation on the Vienna housing market will soon be similar to that in major German cities.

In the weekly podcast “Inside Austria”, SPIEGEL and “Standard” look together at the big and small scandals in Austria.

Together with journalists from both editorial offices, we reconstruct cases and events that move the country.

We look into political abysses, follow the investigations into the cause of Sebastian Kurz and his ÖVP.

And inform about an important Austrian topic of the week.
