In cooperation with the civil society… the end of emergency repair work for the Church of Our Lady of the Annunciation in Daraa

Izra’a Antiquities Division, in cooperation with the local community in the town of Shaqra in the countryside of Daraa, has completed emergency restoration works for the historic Church of Our Lady of the Annunciation.

Milad al-Matrod, head of the division, indicated to SANA reporter that the Church of Our Lady of the Annunciation is an ancient building that has been subjected to vandalism and looting by terrorist organizations during the past years, as the church sustained external and internal damage.

He explained that the Church of Our Lady of the Annunciation, which is located within the archaeological area in the town of Shaqra, is one of the archaeological buildings that have preserved its architectural and engineering texture.

Al-Matrod reviewed the attacks on the church during the past ten years with rocket-propelled grenades, which caused several holes to occur in the base of the dome of the concrete church, its facade and its outer walls, and its contents were looted.

He pointed out that the emergency restoration work included the restoration of the altar, the seats and the windows, and the preparation of the place for placing the icons and electrical installations to restore them to service and to their brilliance and touristic status as one of the sites and attractions in Daraa Governorate.

The founding of the Church of Our Lady of the Annunciation dates back to the fifth and sixth centuries AD. It is contemporary with the Church of Georges in Izraa. It was built of basalt stone in the form of a square on the outside and a cross on the inside. Its four corners contain four niches of concrete built in later periods.
